Back in the 1950s, General Motors was all about pushing the boundaries of automotive design and technology. One of the most memorable creations to come out of this era was the 1956 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket Concept. This golden colored 2 passenger car was a sight to behold, styled to resemble a rocket ready for takeoff.
Debuting at the 1956 General Motors Motorama, the Golden Rocket was a showstopper, featuring a fiberglass body with nerf-like built-in bumpers that gave it an unmistakable rocket effect. Powered by a 234 CID, 275 horsepower Rocket V8 engine, this beast weighed in at 2,500 pounds and was a force to be reckoned with on the road.
But the Golden Rocket wasn't just about power - it was also ahead of its time in terms of technology and design. The interior was decked out in blue and gold leather upholstery, giving it a luxurious feel. The speedometer was mounted in the center of the two-spoked steering wheel, which also featured buttons to tilt the wheel - making it one of the first vehicles with a tilt steering wheel.
One of the most innovative features of the Golden Rocket was its unique seating system. As either door was opened, the roof panel automatically raised, and the seat came up 3 inches and swiveled outward for easy entry or exit. This level of convenience was unheard of at the time and truly set the Golden Rocket apart from other cars of its era.
The Golden Rocket didn't just make a splash at the Motorama - it also made appearances at numerous other auto shows, wowing audiences wherever it went. Despite being a concept car, the Golden Rocket received several revisions and stayed on the show circuit for several years, solidifying its status as a true automotive icon.
In the world of classic cars, the 1956 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket Concept remains a shining example of the creativity and innovation of the 1950s. With its rocket-inspired design, powerful engine, and cutting-edge features, the Golden Rocket is a true golden blast from the past.
