Ferrari 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A: New Era of Driving Thrills

Apr 29, 2025

Ferrari has lifted the curtain on its latest performance icons: the 296 Speciale and the 296 Speciale A, two masterpieces designed to redefine driving exhilaration both on closed circuits and under the open sky. Direct descendants of an exclusive bloodline that includes the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, 488 Pista, and their Spider counterparts, these new Maranello creations raise the benchmark for what’s possible in production supercars.

Peak Performance, Two Ways

At their core, the 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A share the same ferocious heart: a hybrid powertrain combining a turbocharged 120° V6 engine with a cutting-edge electric motor, delivering a staggering 880 cv. Both models set new records for rear-wheel-drive Ferraris — the coupé boasting a dry weight of 1410 kg (1.60 kg/cv) and the spider clocking in at 1490 kg (1.69 kg/cv) thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre and titanium components.

The Speciale duo elevates the already formidable 296 GTB and GTS platforms to new heights, delivering astonishing agility, turn-in responsiveness, and an intuitive, confidence-inspiring character that connects driver to machine like never before.

While the 296 Speciale is the ultimate expression of closed-cockpit performance, the 296 Speciale A introduces Ferrari’s renowned Retractable Hardtop (RHT) system, offering open-air thrills without compromising aerodynamic efficiency or chassis rigidity. With the roof down, the Speciale A amplifies the V6’s symphonic soundtrack, bringing an immersive layer to an already exhilarating experience.

Engineering Excellence

Drawing extensively from Ferrari’s racing expertise, the internal combustion engine features titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons, and a lightened crankshaft. Its output climbs to 700 cv, aided by an F1-derived knock control system and race-grade thermal management solutions. Meanwhile, the electric motor, now with an extra boost mode, contributes 180 cv for short bursts of even greater performance.

The 296 Speciale and Speciale A both feature an uprated 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox, synchronizing the electric motor to eliminate torque interruptions during gear changes, while a sharpened calibration ensures quicker, more engaging shifts.

Despite the spider's additional hardware for its retractable roof, aerodynamic performance remains undiminished. In fact, both models generate an impressive 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h, a 20% increase over their respective base models. A complex interplay of active aero elements, including a faster-acting rear spoiler and intricate airflow management structures borrowed from Ferrari’s GT3 and Challenge racing programs, ensure both grip and high-speed stability.

Precision Dynamics

Both the Speciale and Speciale A were tuned with an unwavering focus on driver engagement across five key pillars: lateral grip, longitudinal acceleration, shifting sensation, braking performance, and sound.

New Multimatic® shock absorbers, titanium springs, a lowered ride height (-5 mm), and sophisticated electronic aids like the latest ABS Evo system deliver razor-sharp responses, reduced roll, and enhanced braking precision. The Extra Boost strategy — first seen on the SF90 XX Stradale — uses electric power bursts to maximize corner-exit acceleration and improve lap times, with smart management ensuring optimal usage throughout a track session.

Dedicated Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres were co-developed specifically for these models, improving grip, consistency, and agility across a wide range of conditions.

Aural and Visual Drama

The Ferrari V6’s already celebrated sound has been taken to new heights in both variants. Thanks to increased acoustic permeability — especially with the top down in the Speciale A — and new direct-sound channels into the cabin, drivers are treated to a richer, more powerful soundtrack that grows sharper with every rev.

Visually, the 296 Speciale adopts a radical, motorsport-inspired design, with sculpted intakes, bold rear wings, and a reimagined rear diffuser that emphasize its aggressive intent. The 296 Speciale A mirrors these enhancements while integrating the retractable roof with elegant precision, maintaining a seamless profile whether the top is up or stowed. Exclusive color schemes, including the vivid Verde Nürburgring for the Speciale and a striking Rosso Dino launch color for the Speciale A, celebrate Ferrari’s commitment to craftsmanship and individuality.

Inside, both models strip back to essentials, using carbon fibre, Alcantara®, and aluminum to create a focused, lightweight cockpit. The iconic gated console layout, minimalist carbon fibre door panels, and strategically exposed fasteners embody the fusion of race-car functionality with Italian artistry.

Uncompromised Everyday Usability

Despite their extreme capabilities, both the 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A retain Ferrari’s commitment to usability, including a 7-year Genuine Maintenance Program, ensuring that performance and reliability endure over time.
