Concept Car Of The Day: 2000 Buick LaCrosse

Apr 26, 2024

In the past, David G. Lyon, Buick's design manager at GM Design, revealed that his team was tasked with creating a versatile sedan/pickup combination after planners identified a need for a utilitarian addition to Buick's lineup. Taking this idea and running with it, the design team set out to not only fulfill this need for utility but to also create a stunning flagship for Buick.

Lyon described the design process for LaCrosse as aiming to create a "drop-dead gorgeous" vehicle with continuously sweeping lines that flow harmoniously from front to back. The design was inspired by Buick's 2000 Park Avenue luxury sedan but featured a shorter body with increased interior space thanks to a longer wheelbase.

Lead exterior designer, Benjamin Jimenez, described how moving the front wheels forward and incorporating sharp creases added tension and visual impact to the car's sleek side profile. The "sweepspear" side sculpture, inspired by designs from the 1940s and 50s, added a touch of classic elegance to the modern vehicle.

Lyon emphasized the importance of drawing on Buick's rich history for design inspiration. Elements such as the distinct vertical-bar grille and portholes, both dating back to the late 1940s, were incorporated into the LaCrosse's design to pay homage to the brand's iconic past.

Looking towards the future, Lyon expressed that LaCrosse was a preview of Buick's upcoming design language, aiming to bring glamour and drama back into car design. General Manager Roger W. Adams connected LaCrosse to Buick's concept vehicles from the late 1990s and emphasized the no-compromise approach to balancing comfort, style, and functionality.

The Buick LaCrosse boasted impressive specifications, including a 4.2-liter V-8 engine, advanced chassis and suspension systems, and striking 21-inch wheels. Its design was a blend of classic Buick cues and forward-thinking innovation, setting the stage for the brand's future flagship vehicles.

As Buick continues to evolve, the LaCrosse remains a testament to the brand's dedication to combining heritage with modern design principles. The vehicle serves as a reminder of Buick's storied past while paving the way for an exciting future within the automotive world.
