Duryea Gem Manufacturing Co. was established in 1916 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the final automotive endeavor of Charles Duryea, a notable figure in the early automotive industry. The company focused on producing a three-wheeled cyclecar, which utilized the same engine and drive system as Duryea's earlier four-wheeled model from 1914-1915.

The chassis for the Duryea Gem was constructed by the Detroit Chassis Company. Despite ambitious marketing claims that it represented "The Biggest Idea in the History of the Motorcar and the Last Word in Automobile Construction," the production of the Duryea Gem was limited, with only six units manufactured. Additionally, a four-wheeled version was created, but it remained a single prototype.

Charles Duryea continued to contribute to the automotive field through his writings, authoring numerous technical books and articles until his death in September 1938. He served as the technical editor of the Automobile Trade Journal for 15 years, further solidifying his influence in automotive engineering and journalism.
