The Alfa Romeo Sportut: Blending Sporty Performance with Functionality

Jul 21, 2025

In 1997, Alfa Romeo ventured into the world of SUVs with the innovative Sportut, a vehicle that combined sporting performance with functionality. Designed by Bertone, the Sportut was based on the popular Alfa 145 model, but with a unique twist.

Presented at the Geneva Motor Show, the Sportut was not just a prototype; it was intended to be a production car, showcasing Alfa Romeo's foray into the SUV market. The choice of an Alfa Romeo engine ensured that the Sportut maintained its sporty character, even in a more rugged terrain.

The design of the Sportut was striking, with lines that emphasized its sporty and aggressive nature. The classic Alfa Romeo radiator grille was front and center, complemented by sleek styling elements borrowed from previous Bertone concepts.

One standout feature of the Sportut was its functionality disguised in a sporty design. The placement of the rear door handle on the pillar gave the impression of a coupé, while still providing the practicality of a four-door car. The rear of the vehicle tapered upwards, leading to a generous rear windscreen.

Details such as lights integrated into the external rear view mirror housing and the unique "bubble" curve of the rear windscreen added sophistication to the Sportut's design. However, the overall concept was clearly focused on production, showcasing Alfa Romeo's ability to enter the SUV market with a model that reflected the brand's strong, aggressive, and stylish personality.

The Alfa Romeo Sportut was a bold statement by the Italian manufacturer, demonstrating their ability to blend sporty performance with everyday functionality in a unique and innovative way. Unfortunately, the Sportut remained a prototype, but its impact on the SUV market can still be felt today, serving as inspiration for future Alfa Romeo SUV models.
