At the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Vision SLR Roadster, an open-top evolution of the Vision SLR super sports car first shown earlier that year. Making its first appearance just weeks after its global debut in Frankfurt, the roadster version carried forward the design and technology of the original concept while introducing new features aimed at enhancing driving experience and safety.

A Heritage-Inspired Design

The Vision SLR Roadster draws stylistic cues from the legendary SL and SLR racing cars of the 1950s, blended with elements from the McLaren-Mercedes Formula 1 car. Its elongated hood, aggressive stance, and race-inspired proportions recall classic Mercedes design while showcasing futuristic innovation. Unique to the roadster is a newly developed soft-top made from a light-transmissive material, merging aesthetic appeal with engineering functionality.

Performance and Engineering

Under the hood, the Vision SLR Roadster is powered by a supercharged 5.5-liter V8 engine, producing 410 kW (557 hp). This powertrain enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.3 seconds, with a top speed of 320 km/h.

Advanced materials such as carbon fiber are used extensively throughout the vehicle, including in the chassis and single-piece seats, to reduce weight while increasing strength. The aluminum and carbon-fiber composite structure provides a rigid and lightweight foundation, contributing to the vehicle’s high-speed stability and dynamic responsiveness.

Brake and Lighting Technology

One of the key technological showcases in the Vision SLR Roadster is the Sensortronic Brake System (SBS). This electro-hydraulic braking system uses data from the ABS and ESP sensors to dynamically calculate the optimal braking pressure for each wheel. It enhances both safety and comfort by enabling faster emergency braking and more refined brake modulation.

The brake system is further enhanced with fiber-reinforced ceramic brake discs, offering superior heat resistance and braking performance under extreme conditions—ideal for a super sports car.

Another innovation is the adaptive headlamp system with a cornering beam, which adjusts lighting direction in response to steering input, improving night-time visibility on winding roads.

Roadster-Specific Features

Unique to this version is the light-transmissive soft-top, a novel material designed to let light through without compromising insulation or protection. This open-air capability transforms the high-performance coupe into a luxury roadster, offering an immersive driving experience without sacrificing the car's structural integrity or aerodynamics.

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz Vision SLR Roadster is a forward-looking concept that bridges heritage with cutting-edge automotive engineering.
