Bugatti Unveils the One-Off W16 Mistral Blanc Éternel

Jul 3, 2026

As production of the legendary W16-powered Bugatti models approaches its conclusion, the French marque continues to demonstrate the possibilities offered by its Sur Mesure personalization program. The latest one-off creation, named the W16 Mistral 'Blanc Éternel', combines contemporary digital design methods with traditional craftsmanship and a long-standing collaboration with Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM).

The origins of this project can be traced back to 2011, when Bugatti and KPM introduced the Veyron Grand Sport 'L'Or Blanc'. That unique automobile became one of the earliest examples of Bugatti's highly individualized approach, bringing genuine porcelain together with automotive design. Frank Heyl, now Bugatti Design Director, participated in the development of that special Veyron, applying its characteristic flowing graphics directly onto the body by hand.

The visual inspiration for 'L'Or Blanc' came from a porcelain vase created for KPM by Italian designer Enzo Mari. Decorated with elegant blue brushstrokes across a white surface, the vase inspired Bugatti's designers to transfer a similarly clean graphical language onto the sculptural body of the Veyron. Rather than creating arbitrary decoration, the team based the graphics on the reflection lines used by automotive designers to inspect body surfaces, transforming a technical development tool into a distinctive design element.

Fifteen years later, Bugatti revisits this collaboration with an entirely different approach. Instead of reproducing the reflection-line concept, the designers focused on illustrating how the company's development process has evolved. While the Veyron was shaped with the help of physical clay models, the W16 Mistral was designed entirely within a digital environment using Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines, commonly known as NURBS. These precisely controlled digital surfaces define every section of the body before becoming the finished automobile.

For the W16 Mistral 'Blanc Éternel', these normally invisible digital surface divisions become the central theme of the exterior. Fine black lines extend across the pure white bodywork, revealing the underlying geometry that forms the roadster's complex surfaces. The result visually exposes the digital architecture hidden beneath the finished design while maintaining the elegant simplicity associated with white porcelain.

Although the graphics originate from a digital design process, their execution remains entirely dependent on traditional craftsmanship. After the body receives its white finish, every line is individually positioned using masking tape applied directly onto the completed vehicle. Once the surrounding areas are protected, the exposed channels are painted in black before the masking is removed. Achieving consistent line quality across the W16 Mistral's three-dimensional body requires considerable precision, with every transition carefully aligned across adjacent panels.

The contrasting graphics naturally emphasize the roadster's signature styling features, including the horseshoe grille, the sculpted front section, the characteristic Bugatti C-line, prominent side air intakes and the distinctive X-shaped rear lighting arrangement. Rather than concealing the complexity of the body, the design highlights the engineering precision behind every surface.

Porcelain remains an important element of the collaboration with KPM. Several exterior details are manufactured from the material, including the EB emblem, the fuel and oil filler caps and two inserts integrated into the engine cover, carrying KPM Berlin's royal scepter logo.

Producing these components involves challenges unique to porcelain manufacturing. During firing, each piece contracts by approximately 17 percent, requiring every component to be designed with the final dimensions already anticipated before entering the kiln. Only through this process can the finished pieces fit precisely into their designated locations on the vehicle.

The same graphical concept continues inside the cabin. White leather upholstery receives the identical black line pattern found on the exterior, requiring Bugatti to develop a dedicated production process. Individual leather sections are carefully masked by hand before black paint is applied directly onto the surface, producing sharp transitions while maintaining the durability expected from an automotive interior.

Porcelain again plays a functional role throughout the cockpit. The speaker cover, kneepad inserts, gear selector shells, center console armrest insert and window switches are all manufactured from genuine porcelain. Instead of serving purely as decorative accents, these components become part of the driver's everyday interaction with the car, allowing occupants to experience the material through touch as well as appearance.

To accompany the completion of the one-off roadster, Bugatti and KPM have also introduced a limited porcelain collection inspired by the project. The series includes the To-Drive Cup together with KPM's Aviator Cup in two different sizes. Production is limited to 1,000 handmade pieces, extending the collaboration between both companies beyond the automobile itself.

As the W16 chapter draws to a close, the 'Blanc Éternel' establishes a direct connection between two milestones in Bugatti's recent history. From the porcelain-inspired Veyron 'L'Or Blanc' to the digitally influenced W16 Mistral, the collaboration with KPM continues to demonstrate how advanced engineering, traditional craftsmanship and specialist materials can be brought together in a single automotive creation.
