A Bugatti Like No Other: Brouillard, the First of the Programme Solitaire

Aug 07, 2025

Bugatti has long stood as a benchmark for engineering brilliance, artistic vision, and a deep reverence for heritage. With the unveiling of Brouillard, the first creation under the new Programme Solitaire, the marque elevates the idea of bespoke automobile craftsmanship to its most rarefied form.

This is not simply a new model. It is an entirely different philosophy of car-building.

Programme Solitaire: The New Apex of Coachbuilding

Bugatti's lineage in coachbuilding traces back over a century, to a time when cars were not just engineered but sculpted. Jean Bugatti, with his revolutionary in-house designs, helped move the brand away from external collaborations and toward an era of iconic, integrated design — with masterpieces like the Type 57 SC Atlantic leading the way.

Now, Programme Solitaire revisits that golden era through a modern lens. Positioned beyond even the already ultra-exclusive Bugatti Sur Mesure, Solitaire will produce no more than two creations per year. Each will be a one-of-one commission — complete vehicles shaped by the individual vision of their owners and executed with the full creative capacity of Bugatti’s design and engineering teams.

Brouillard: A Tribute to Ettore Bugatti's Favorite Horse

The inaugural model of Programme Solitaire is Brouillard, a coupe whose story begins not on the racetrack or the drawing board, but in Ettore Bugatti’s stables.

Named after his cherished white horse — a majestic creature that could open its own stable door thanks to a custom mechanism designed by Ettore himself — Brouillard is a tribute not only to the animal’s speed, grace, and beauty, but to the spirit of invention and passion for elegance that defined the founder.

This deep connection between the machine and its equine muse is not metaphorical. It’s woven into every detail, from the embroidered horse motifs in the cabin to a miniature glass-encased sculpture of Brouillard within the machined aluminum gear shifter.

A Masterpiece in Form and Function

Built upon the ultimate expression of the W16 platform — the quad-turbocharged, 1,600 PS engine — Brouillard is as powerful as it is beautiful. This is the highest evolution of Bugatti's renowned W16 powertrain, refined over nearly two decades.

The bodywork represents a masterclass in proportion and aerodynamic integration. The lower third is rendered in dark tones to visually anchor the car and highlight the flowing lines of the upper structure. This approach gives the illusion of a longer, lower, more athletic stance — a dynamic silhouette further emphasized by the fixed ducktail wing and a re-engineered rear diffuser with innovative exhaust packaging.

Every functional element — from air intakes to cooling systems — is seamlessly embedded into the design. There is no separation between engineering and artistry; they coexist in perfect balance.

Interior Artistry: A Sanctuary of Craft and Innovation

Inside Brouillard, the commitment to artistry reaches an extraordinary level. The cabin is a study in textures and contrast — custom-woven Parisian tartans, green-tinted carbon fiber, and increased machined aluminum elements come together under a glass roof, allowing natural light to cascade into what feels like a cathedral of motion.

The center spine of the vehicle flows uninterrupted from the hood into the cabin, visible through the transparent roof panel, reinforcing a sense of unity between exterior and interior.

Seats are tailored to the owner’s specifications with unique leather patchwork layouts. Door panels and seat backs carry embroidered homages to Brouillard, the horse. Nothing is off-the-shelf. Everything is art.

The Vision of a Collector

The commissioning owner of Brouillard is no stranger to the Bugatti universe. A deeply knowledgeable collector of vintage and modern Bugattis, as well as the furniture of Carlo Bugatti and bronze sculptures of Rembrandt Bugatti, this individual wanted to create a vehicle that would synthesize all elements of the family’s legacy.

In Brouillard, that vision has been fully realized — a car that is not just a Bugatti in name, but a holistic celebration of the Bugatti family's art, design, and mechanical genius.

A New Era Begins at Monterey Car Week

The official unveiling of Brouillard will take place at Monterey Car Week, marking the formal introduction of the Programme Solitaire. With just two vehicles to be commissioned each year, Solitaire will remain the most exclusive expression of Bugatti’s craft — not by price, but by singularity.

Built on proven powertrains and chassis, these commissions will serve as canvases for truly individualized artistic expression. Brouillard sets a tone that is unmistakable: this is no longer about customization — this is about creation.

Bugatti’s history is defined by individuals who saw cars not just as machines, but as mediums. With Brouillard, that vision gallops forward once more.
