The Coates-Goshen Automobile Company was established in Goshen, New York, and operated from 1908 to 1910. The company was founded by Joseph Saunders Coates, who was an enthusiast of sulky racing and previously managed the Miller Can Company, which specialized in manufacturing high-quality sulkies. Coates began experimenting with automobile design in 1905, leading to the production of the Coates-Goshen car three years later.

The Coates-Goshen automobiles were known for their quality, featuring either a 25 or 32 horsepower four-cylinder engine. The design included a frame that was lowered at the scuttle to facilitate easier entry. The company produced several models, including runabouts, town cars, and a four-seater tourer known as the baby tonneau. By 1910, the company expanded its offerings to include larger engines of 45 and 60 horsepower, with the latter model built on a 140-inch (3556 mm) wheelbase and priced at $4,200.

Despite the initial success, the Coates-Goshen Automobile Company faced a significant setback when the factory was destroyed by fire after producing only 32 cars. Following this incident, Coates was unable to continue the automobile business. From 1912 to 1914, he shifted his focus to manufacturing the Coates Tricar, a three-wheeled delivery van. In his later years, Coates dedicated himself to the design of horse-racing tracks, a pursuit he continued into his late 80s.
