Barrows Vehicle Company was an early American automobile manufacturer based in New York City, active from 1895 to 1899. Founded by Charles H. Barrows, the company specialized in the production of battery-powered vehicles. Barrows designed a unique car featuring two front wheels positioned closely together, with the battery unit situated between them. This innovative design allowed for the attachment of various bodies, accommodating one to four passengers, which Barrows referred to as "practically a mechanical horse."
The prototype of Barrows' vehicle was constructed in Willimantic, Connecticut, while the production models were manufactured in New York City. In addition to its own production, Barrows sought to collaborate with the Lengert Company of Philadelphia to expand the reach of his designs. Some of the vehicles were also produced by the New England Electric Vehicle Company, a subsidiary of the Electric Vehicle Company of Hartford, Connecticut, which was known for its Columbia electric vehicles.
