KAT Designs was a British specialist vehicle manufacturer based in North Perrott, Somerset. The company was founded in 1983 by Simon Saunders, a stylist who had previously worked for General Motors, Aston Martin and Tickford. KAT Designs initially focused on producing styling bodykits for production saloon cars, including models such as the Mini and the Ford Escort.
The company's direction shifted with the development of the MPV, a multi-purpose vehicle designed around interchangeable bodywork. Owners could convert the car between several different configurations, including a basic jeep, a convertible, a targa, a van and an estate, with as many as ten distinct body styles available in total.
The MPV was built on a strengthened Ford Escort Mk III/Mk4 floorpan, retaining the original bulkheads, inner wings and cross-members from the donor car. Fibreglass body panels were fitted to create the vehicle's various interchangeable forms.
