Modoc (United States) - AllCarIndex

Named after a Native American tribe, the Modoc was built for the Montgomery Ward mail order company of Chicago by the newly established Modoc Motor Company. It was an assembled car, with a 4-cylinder Continental engine, Brown-Lipe clutch and gearbox, Gemmer steering gear, Rayfield carburettor and AO Smith chassis frame. A 5-seater tourer was the only body style offered. The Modoc sold for $1250 in 1912, but the price was slashed to $800 in 1914. The main problem with the Modoc which caused its demise was post-purchase service or assistance - with no dealers, there was no easy way that customers could get repairs, except for bringing the car back to the Chicago factory. Total Modoc production is unknown.
