The American Motor Carriage Company, based in Cleveland, Ohio, was active from 1902 to 1904. The company is primarily known for producing the American Gas, a light runabout vehicle. This model was equipped with a 7-horsepower single-cylinder engine, which was positioned under the seat. It featured a planetary transmission and a single-chain final drive system.
Despite its innovative design, the American Gas was considered overpriced at $1,000, which limited its market appeal. In an attempt to boost sales, the company reduced the price to $750 in 1904. However, these efforts were insufficient to sustain the business, and the American Motor Carriage Company went bankrupt in the same year. Throughout its brief existence, the factory had a production capacity of 200 cars per year, a target that was never achieved.
