The Electrification of Classic Cars: Is the Conversion Worth It?

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact number of classic cars in the world, but the US alone is home to around 43 million vehicles that can be considered collector items. People are drawn to them because of several factors such as emotional, practical, and financial considerations The classic car market has stabilized preceded by a period of significant volatility and rapid growth. One of the factors contributing to the stability is the growing trend of electric vehicle (EV) conversions appealing to environmentally conscious enthusiasts. Yes, it is possible to convert conventional cars to electric. EV retrofitting is a growing niche for classic cars. Understandably, EV conversion can be costly and complex. However, for car enthusiasts who want to preserve their beloved vintage cars, it is a way to create a bespoke vehicle that stands out. Giving an old car a new clean life also speaks of environmental benefits in addition to reliability and reduced maintenance.

How the Retrofitting Process Works

Evidently, the first step in conversion is the removal of the fuel (gasoline or diesel) powertrain. This will include stripping the engine, fuel tank, exhaust system, radiator and cooling system, or even the original transmission. Afterwards, EV components will replace the old internal combustion engine (ICE) system. An electric motor will be installed which can be a simple direct current (DC) motor for basic conversions or power alternating current (AC) motors for performance. A battery pack, which is the heart of the EV, will be fitted to store electricity. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common choice, and the size and placement of the battery pack are critical to range, weight distribution, and safety issues. Furthermore, a motor controller or inverter will act as the brain of the electric drivetrain responsible for regulating power flow from the battery to the motor and controlling speed and torque.

Another important retrofit is an onboard charger that will convert AC power from a charging station or wall outlet into DC power to charge the car’s battery pack. EV conversion companies will also design their systems to be compatible with the existing and widely available EV charging infrastructure. Vehicle owners can use a standard household socket which is the slowest method of charging.  Businesses and individuals can also invest in an AC charging station or wall box for home and workplace charging. They are fast and convenient for those on the go. Public and commercial DC chargers  exist which can be found at highway service stations and larger charging hubs. These stations deliver power at much higher rates significantly reducing charging times. They are ideal for those who are traveling.

Challenges and Innovations

A philosophical debate exists on what constitutes the soul of a classic car. Many enthusiasts will argue that the soul of a vintage car lies in its original mechanical components – the roar of engines, the tactile experience of shifting gears, and even the smell of oil and petrol. An EV conversion will then strip the car of its historical integrity. On the other hand, proponents argue that retrofitting a classic car can preserve it for future generations because it is more reliable, cleaner, and more powerful rendering it usable in modern traffic. However, it is true that there are many technical challenges and innovations when retrofitting a classic vehicle.

One of the many challenges of conversion is the weight distribution and packaging. Since classic cars weren’t designed to carry heavy battery packs, engineers face the problem of integrating batteries in a way that maintains the car’s original balance, handling, and aesthetic. Therefore, connecting modern EV components with the car’s existing gauges, steering, brakes, and heating systems requires bespoke solutions and intricate wiring. The good news is many reputable conversion companies focus on reversible conversions meaning that the original ICE powertrain is kept intact. The EV components are designed to be removable enabling the car to be reverted to its original state if desired. Cost is another factor that may prevent car enthusiasts from retrofitting their classic cars because it can run from several thousand to over hundred thousands of dollars depending on the model and retrofit desired. Regulatory hurdles are also potential obstacles to getting an EV retrofit approval for road use ensuring that it meets all safety, technical, and environmental standards.

Shifting towards the electrification of classic cars is a growing trend that ensures cherished vehicles can continue to be enjoyed and driven for many years. Retrofits offer modern practicality, environmental responsibility, and enhanced performance.
