like a three-legged phoenix rising from the ashes, the davis brand is reborn with the divan ii, combining the best attributes of the 1948 3-wheeler with modern technology, performance and efficiency – but none of the fraud.
new york (april 1, 2015) – nearly 70 years ago, a used car salesman from van nuys, california, rocked the automotive industry with a stunning new vehicle – a three wheeler with a 46 horsepower engine, an aerodynamic body and a four-across bench seat – the original davis divan promised 50mpg, a 100mph top speed and a price of only $995. today the davis divan is back, featuring a cutting-edge type ii kardashev powerplant and stunning lines penned by ben hermance. the concept car will make its debut in new york, and the prototype, which is already in production at the original van nuys facility, will debut on april 31 of this year.
“i have always had a fondness for the original davis divan, and despite its abrupt end i thought that the low rolling resistance and improved aerodynamics of a three wheeled vehicle would be perfect to suit modern needs,” said new davis motorcar company president kevin flynn. “we challenged ourselves to come up with a vehicle that pushes the boundaries of both technology and design, and we believe the divan ii will change the world – or at least change the reality of its users.”
based on the design work of ben hermance and structural engineering by freeman dyson, the davis divan ii relies heavily on composite materials – specifically fullerene carbon-70 – for its lightweight, high-strength superstructure. beyond its unique powerplant, the divan ii also features an autopilot mode that combines current technology – including automated parking, lane-departure warnings and speed-sensitive cruise control – with a revolutionary fully automated drive mode controlled by the vehicle’s onboard digital assistant developed by dr. susan calvin, phd, of us robotics.
other features of the divan ii include a two-way adjustable bench seat that can accommodate four across finished in rich corinthian leather, dual-zone climate control and a secondary cargo section aft of the passenger compartment.
