Burly

Burly Industries was a kit car manufacturer based in Mendon, Utah, that specialized in custom bodies designed to fit onto modified Volkswagen Beetle chassis. The company built its reputation on transforming the humble Beetle into distinctive, stylized vehicles through the use of aftermarket coachwork.

Among its notable products was the Buffel, a custom rear body intended for chopped Beetle platforms. Its design echoed early European special-bodied cars, featuring a coupé-style roofline and fully enclosed rear wheel arches, giving the finished vehicle a more elegant and vintage appearance than the standard Beetle.

The company also produced a "Woody" body style, which incorporated genuine wood trim along a station wagon-style rear section. This body was often paired with a front end resembling a 1937 or 1940 Ford, complete with a similarly styled hood, resulting in a distinctive vehicle reminiscent of classic American surf wagons and well suited for carrying surfboards.

Through these designs, Burly Industries carved out a niche within the kit car industry, appealing to enthusiasts who sought to give the Volkswagen Beetle a more customized, nostalgic, or coachbuilt appearance.
