Gitane

Gitane was a British car marque associated with George Fowell Plant Ltd, based in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.

The company's principal offering was the Gitane GT, an ambitious and visually striking coupé design. It was built as a two-door, two-seater with a mid-mounted engine layout. During development, consideration was given to fitting a Giannini engine, but the company ultimately specified a B.M.C. Mini unit instead. The manufacturer quoted an output of 84bhp from the 998cc engine, said to be sufficient for a claimed top speed of 130mph (209km/h).

The car's chassis was constructed from square-section tubing, and it featured inboard disc brakes on all four wheels, an unusual specification for a car of its type and era.

Despite its technical ambitions, the Gitane GT was priced too high to achieve any meaningful commercial success, and it failed to make a true impact on the market.
