Gitane was a British automobile manufacturer founded in 1962 by George Fowell Plant Ltd, based in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The company aimed to produce a distinctive sports car that combined performance with aesthetic appeal.
The Gitane GT was the brand's notable model, characterized as an ambitious two-door coupé featuring a mid-mounted engine layout. Initially, there were plans to equip the vehicle with a Giannini engine; however, the final production model utilized a B.M.C. Mini engine. This 998cc unit was rated at 84 horsepower, enabling the Gitane GT to achieve a claimed top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).
The vehicle's design included a chassis constructed from square section tubes and was equipped with inboard disc brakes on all four wheels, contributing to its sporty handling characteristics. Despite its innovative features and attractive design, the Gitane GT was priced at a premium, which limited its market impact and overall sales success.
