Bridgewater

The Bridgewater Motor Co. Ltd was based in Eastover, Bridgewater, Somerset, England. The firm traced its origins to Harry Carver's Cycle Works, established in 1887. From around 1900, the business expanded into the repair of motorcycles and cars, and in 1902 it became a local agent for De Dion-Bouton and MMC vehicles.

The company built its first car in 1905. These were assembled vehicles rather than being manufactured in-house, using chassis supplied by Malicet et Blin and engines from either Ballot or White and Poppe. The Ballot-powered models were rated at 16/20 or 24/30 horsepower, while the White and Poppe versions were offered in 12 and 14 horsepower forms. All used four-cylinder T-head engines, with bodywork supplied by the local coachbuilding firm Raworth and Co.

Total production of Bridgewater-badged cars was limited to no more than eleven or twelve examples, most of which were sold to customers in the surrounding area. Following this brief venture into car manufacturing, the company reverted to selling vehicles produced by other makers. It maintained a long-standing relationship as an Austin dealer that lasted some forty years, before taking on a Renault franchise in 1980. The business eventually closed in 1994.
