Bridgewater

Bridgewater Motor Co. Ltd was based in Eastover, Bridgewater, Somerset. The company originated from Harry Carver's Cycle Works, founded in 1887, which from around 1900 also undertook repairs of motorcycles and cars. In 1902 it became an agent for De Dion-Bouton and MMC vehicles.

The firm built its first car in 1905. These were assembled vehicles, using chassis supplied by Malicet et Blin fitted with engines from Ballot or White & Poppe. The Ballot-powered models were rated at 16/20 or 24/30hp, while the White & Poppe versions were of 12 and 14hp; all used four-cylinder T-head engines. Bodywork was supplied by the local coachbuilding firm Raworth & Co.

Total production of Bridgewater cars amounted to no more than 11 or 12 vehicles, most of which were sold within the local area. Following this limited manufacturing venture, the company returned to selling a range of makes, maintaining an association with Austin that lasted for 40 years. It began selling Renault vehicles in 1980 before closing down in 1994.
