ZiL (Zavod imeni Likhachova) was a major Moscow-based manufacturer of trucks, buses and state limousines. It traced its origins to 1916 as AMO and was renamed ZiS in 1931 before taking the ZiL name in 1956. The factory produced the Soviet Union’s first domestically built truck, the AMO-F-15 (1924), and later became known for high-volume workhorses such as the ZIL-130 and ZIL-131, as well as hand-built executive limousines supplied to the Kremlin, including the ZIL-111, ZIL-114 and ZIL-4104 families. Over its history the enterprise also developed special-purpose and military vehicles and maintained museum and heritage programs on site. After the Soviet period the company operated as OJSC AMO-ZiL under the Moscow city government’s ownership; the last vehicles were assembled in 2012, after which automotive production ceased and the plant site entered phased redevelopment.
