Lincoln [5] - Maharajah Concept

time-calendar.png 1953

The exotic tapestries of the Orient, the cool linens of South America, and the modern vinyls of American chemistry have been combined in a striking alignment to form the interior upholsteries and trim of seven special customized cars to be on public exhibit April 26 through May 3 at Lincoln-Mercury's "Style Preview of Tomorrow".

Utilized by Ford Motor Company stylists to accentuate specific and definite styling themes, these fabrics have been combined with exterior paints in a perfect blend of artistic design, resulting in unique and striking custom-built cars.

Each of the cars has been given a name symbolic of its specialized treatment as in the "Maharajah", a regal Lincoln Capri sedan with luxurious red and gold brocade and white repp; the "Contemporary", an ultra smart all-black Mercury convertible which highlights a modern black pattern woven in one of the newly-developed synthetics; and the "Kentucky Colonel", a Mercury sedan with its frost white linen and its Milan straw vinyl.

Fabrics for these cars were chosen for their beauty and for their adaptability in production automobiles. While none is currently available, Lincoln-Mercury product planners are presenting them in order to test the public's reaction. Based on their acceptance, adaptations of there fabrics may soon be added as regular options available to all purchasers.

Lincoln-Mercury's Style Preview of Tomorrow, where these experimental designs may be seen, will be open to the public at the Lincoln plant, 6200 W. Warren avenue at Livernois, daily from 11:00 a. m. to 11:00 p. m. except Sunday when it will open at 2:00 p.m.

The cars and their special fabrics are:

MAHARAJA. A 1953 Lincoln Capri four door sedan. Seats are upholstered in red and gold brocade, and white repp. Interior hardware is gold plate, with carpet of Bengal red plush.

CONTEMPORARY. A 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible.

Seat bolsters are genuine black leather, seat cushions are charcoal and white block patterned bodycloth, one of the newly-developed man-made fibres. Touches of white leather have been added to the sun visors and arm rests. The floor is covered with black moss tread carpeting.

KENTUCKY COLONEL. A 1953 Mercury four-door sedan.

Seat bolsters are frost white Peruvian linen with mint green vinyl binding, with the same treatment carried through onto the upper portion of the door and cowl panels. Cream Milan straw vinyl on the seat cushions and on the backs below the bolsters continues the theme. Green moss tread carpeting covers the floor.

BAHAMIAN. A 1953 Mercury hardtop. A study in tropical browns, the trim theme is a tan tropical print vinyl and a cream fibre weave vinyl. The floor covering is brown broad fibre weave vinyl.

ANNIVERSARY. A 1953 Lincoln Capri convertible. A tribute to Ford Motor Company's 50th Anniversary, this car has gold plate on all hardware. Seats and panels are white metallic leather bound with gold leather welts. A thick fuzzy white carpeting covers the floor.

CADET. A 1953 Lincoln Capri four (door sedan. A salute to West Point Military Academy. Seats are trimmed to correspond with the famed coats worn by West Pointers, using blue-gray broadcloth, set off by black nylon braid and brass buttons. Cream colored broadcloth accentuates the military academy theme on the seat bolsters and the upper portion of the door panels.

MIDSHIPMAN. A 1953 Lincoln Capri hardtop. A nautical theme with features emulating a seafaring craft.. Interior fabrics are navy and white broadcloth, with white nylon rope piping. White orlon has been used to cover the exterior roof.
