Ford - Mustang Mach 1 Prototype

time-calendar.png 1965

Mustang Mach I is a sleek, racing-oriented experimental version of Ford's 1968 Mustang 2-2. fastback.

Extensively modified from the original Mach I introduced last year, this new show car has a longer sloping hood and competition-type ducktail air spoiler.

There is a strong similarity between the Mach I, the production Mustang and the Ford GT competition vehicles. All were designed at the Ford Design Center in Dearborn, Mich.

The front end of the 1968 Mach I, nearly eight inches longer than the 1987 version, is equipped with a unique recessed grille. Rectangular headlights are set horizontally in the fenders. Clear lens covers are mounted flush with the fenders to minimize high-speed air turbulence.

A 64-degree windshield angle and twin-louvered hood accentuate the racing look of the Mach I. Quick release fuel filler caps, identical to those on the Ford GT's, are located on the roof pillars behind the fixed sideglass. Racing mirrors are mounted on the sideglass just ahead of integral convenience openings. There are no conventional vent windows.

Functional air Intakes in the body just behind the doors provide extra cooling to the rear brakes. Flared wheel openings are designed to accept special wide-oval, low-profile racing tires mounted on cast aluminum alloy wheels. The wheels are color-keyed to the exterior color which is a special iridescent "candy-flame" red.

The new competition-type air spoiler increases stability at high speeds. Two unique rectangular exhaust outlets are mounted Just under the bright airfoil-shaped rear bumper.

Designed as a two-passenger competition vehicle, the Mustang Mach I is also equipped with specially designed anatomical bucket seats which not only provide excellent support and comfort but swivel for easier entry and exit.

Interior trim consists of a special, extremely supple vinyl seat upholstery and black carpeting and headlining. The door panels have map pockets and arm rests built into the door shell.

A floor-mounted gearshift with competition-type shift gate is derived from the Ford Cobra and is located between the bucket seats for optimum convenience. A chemical-type fire extinguisher is mounted on the tunnel ahead of the gear shift.

Because of the low roof and semi-reclining bucket seats, the instrument panel and steering wheel have been positioned for maximum visibility and ease of operation. The car is equipped with competition shoulder harnesses, seat belts and a roll bar behind the front seat.

A 17-square-foot deck lid, which Includes the backlight glass, can be opened hydraulically from inside the car. A chrome-plated, fitted tool kit is mounted next to the spare tire inside the rear compartment.
