Ford - Aurora

time-calendar.png 1964

A dramatically different "luxury lounge" station wagon with 2 unique design features, the Aurora was designed and fabricated in the Ford Motor Company Design Center. The experimental unit could herald the beginning of a new era in luxurious interior appointments and unusual devices to produce and control light.

A major objective of the Aurora is to explore new comfort features for greater enjoyment of long trips. Ford designers planned the interior to accommodate a television set, three separate AM/FM radios, thermoelectric combinations oven-refrigerator units, a sound recorder and a built-in beverage cooler and cabinet.

This compartmentalized interior consists of a "command post" driver's area, a central lounge with a swivel seat and a curved sofa, and a children's area that can be isolated from the rest of the interior by a power-operated glass partition.

This dream station wagon utilizes electro-luminescent safety lightning, a hank of 12 one-inch sealed-beam headlamps, a power-adjustable polarizing sun roof, and both indirect and direct interior lightning.

At the touch of a button, the roof section over the forward seats can be changed from opaque to transparent. The sun visors, incorporating internal louvers in tinted plastic shields, are designed to change the degree of the translucence when the visor angle is altered.

Full-length ornamentation in the shape of spears on each side of the Aurora can be illuminated by means of electro-luminescence, a "cool light" principle to create safety running lights. The tips of the spears are outfitted with turn indicator lights that supplement the usual turn signals in the front and rear.

The Aurora has a "clamshell rear-entry system", which consists of a counter-balanced tailgate that folds down an a liftgate that slides over the roof to permit easier access to the rear-facing children's seat. The tailgate becomes a carpeted step in further facilitate entry and exit.

In front of the driver is an advanced instrument panel designed to incorporate a turnpike lane idicator system, a position indicator map that would automatically adjust to the location of the car, a conduct-speed control device, and a large speedometer with individually illuminated numerals.
