The Proto T was a concept car from Seat, the Spanish manufacturer that came under majority ownership of Volkswagen in early 1986. It was first shown as a plastic, wood, and plaster mock-up at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) in the autumn of 1989. Design work and the 1:1 model were produced by Giugiaro's company Ital Design, which had also styled the Seat Ibiza and the first Volkswagen Golf.
At the time of its unveiling, industry observers already linked the Proto T to the upcoming Toledo, the mid-range model intended to top out the Seat lineup, though Seat indicated the production saloon would have less rounded lines than the concept while still sharing a family resemblance. The Proto T was presented as an expression of a product philosophy called "Econosport," combining economy with sportiness. It was conceived as a five-door saloon that could be fitted with engines ranging from a 1.6-litre unit up to a multi-valve 2.3-litre turbocharged engine producing 200 hp, paired with four-wheel drive.
The design featured pronounced curved surfaces, large glazed areas, and a tall, short tail, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.243. Planned features included an electronic system providing information on driving conditions, a rear-mounted telecamera, and a magnetic card in place of a conventional door key.
At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1990, the completed version appeared under the name Proto TL. Its interior was finished with four leather individual seats and was described as spacious and bright. A Jaguar concept by Ital Design called Kensington, shown at the same Geneva show, shared a similar basic shape on a considerably larger scale.
The Proto T measured 430 cm in length, 171 cm in width, and 143 cm in height, with a wheelbase of 264.5 cm and track widths of 145/144 cm. It used front-wheel drive or Volkswagen's Syncro all-wheel-drive system, with engines spanning 60 to 200 hp.
