MAZDA REVEALS TRIBUTE "HAYATE" CONCEPT

Mazda reveals a new sporty concept version of its all-new Tribute at the Birmingham Motor Show in response to an emerging trend for SUVs which are designed primarily for on-road use.

The Tribute "Hayate" Concept is based upon the top-of-the-range 3.0-litre V6 4WD model which goes on sale in Europe early in 2001. While this concept model retains off-road capability, Mazda's engineers have modified the suspension, brakes wheels and tyres to deliver even more impressive on-road dynamics.

Mazda designers have also given this vehicle a new look, creating an even more distinctive appearance both inside and out.

The suspension has been stiffened and lowered by 1.5 inches, while the 4-wheel disc brakes have been changed to front discs and rear drums. Wide, low-profile tyres and 20-inch wheels have also been fitted to enhance roadholding and handling.

Various modifications have been made to the body to improve aerodynamics as well as to achieve unique styling. These include the adoption of special front and rear bumpers and side cladding, plus the use of an over-fender and unique grille. A special orange colour scheme ensures that the Tribute "Hayate" Concept stands out from the crowd.

The distinctive interior contains sporty bucket seats to support the body during spirited driving, a leather-covered rim for the steering wheel for secure grip, plus sports pedals which are resistant to slipping. The two-tone grey interior with orange stitching also features full leather upholstery, while there are also sports instruments.

The Tribute "Hayate" Concept retains the 145 kW 3.0-litre engine from the standard Tribute, as well as the rotary blade coupling four wheel drive system and multi link suspension on the rear wheels.

By blending new ideas with the impressive Tribute production model, Mazda has matched the latest trend for road-going bias in SUVs, while clearly capturing and exhibiting the Stylish, Insightful and Spirited personality of the Mazda brand. This was achieved through a design brief to refine the tough and rugged SUV styling into a smooth and simple aerodynamic design with a stylish, urban look.

In achieving this goal Mazda has fully responded to the growing demand for SUVs to retain the style and appearance of off-roaders while delivering outstanding on-road dynamics. The new Tribute will satisfy the ever-growing demand for stylish and refined SUVs when it goes on sale across Europe within the next few months - but the Tribute "Hayate" Concept model demonstrates Mazda"s vision for further emphasis upon the on-road performance of such vehicles.
