Isuzu XU-1

1993

The Isuzu XU-1 is a concept vehicle defined as an urban multi-purpose utility vehicle. The basic concept is tailored toward multi-purpose utility, ranging from shopping and commuting to weekend leisure use by families and groups. It presents a design direction for urban recreational vehicles (RVs) by combining daily usability with rough-road driving capabilities.

The styling of the XU-1 is developed around the theme of "Dynamic & Friendly." The vehicle's proportions incorporate a "max package" philosophy applied to an RV layout, featuring simple, clean surfaces combined with sculptural, dynamic graphics. The design elements merge RV-style strength with urban smartness, utilizing a high beltline, open side glass surfaces, and a specialized spare wheel storage compartment configured to symbolize RV characteristics while minimizing a sense of intimidation. For ingress, egress, and daily convenience, the vehicle features front and rear gull-wing doors paired with built-in step sections that swing open toward the user.
