The Aspid is a concept coupe from Italdesign Giugiaro, presented as a companion piece to the Aztec and, like it, never completed as a fully drivable vehicle. Up to the beltline the two cars were identical, but the Aspid was created to demonstrate the integration of sheet steel and new glass materials into a single unified body structure.
The design featured extensive glass surfaces, including door-flank windows, that were graduated in tint according to visibility needs in different areas. A longitudinally split glass canopy, which gave the Aspid the character of a one-box vehicle, could be hinged open toward the front. Glazing continued unbroken over the roll protection behind the seats and along both sides of the tall rear deck, which sloped gently down toward the back of the car. The design echoed themes from the Manta, the one-box coupe built on a Bizzarrini chassis twenty years earlier, with which Giugiaro had introduced Italdesign at the Turin motor show in 1968. Compared with the Aztec, the Aspid had a more aerodynamically shaped front end and stood 6.5 cm lower.
The body was a two-door streamlined coupe with forward-hinging roof sections and seating for two, using an underbody structure shared with the Aztec. It measured 4270 mm long, 1970 mm wide and 1110 mm high, with a 2600 mm wheelbase and track widths of 167/166 cm. It used a mid-mounted, transversely installed Audi 200 Turbo five-cylinder engine of 2226 cc producing 200 hp at 6200 rpm, driving all four wheels.
