Mazomoto - 424

time-calendar.png 1997

In March 1995 I saw my Equus used on the poster of the Budapest Autoshow. I felt the urge to exploit this situation. I made preliminary sketches of a unique sportscar. This was the 424, named after a Hungarian steam locomotive.

A very quick search for sponsorship followed, with the help of my friend "Zoli" (nickname for Zoltán) Berki. Then the work started. First everyone thought I am an idiot but as the shape started to unfold more and more pals joined and offered a hand. First "Peti" (nickname forPéter) Üveges and Gabinickname for Gábor aka Gabriel) Országh, Peti Kukorelli and others. All in all about 15 students took part in the gestation period. I feel deep gratitude towards them as they bowed to my design will without protest, in spite of the fact that the three aforementioned guys attend higher grades and can match with my abilities.

The way as we did it:
- polyurethane foam plates were glued together in a mould
- edges were smoothed
- everything was laminated with epoxy resin
- with putty we greased
- polished
- details were shaped
- we exhibited it
- laurels were reaped.

The way as I designed it:

The concept is based around a windshield from a 1957 Opel Rekord Olympia.Every curve is derived from the windshield. The huge front intakes and side out takes are due to the function. To prevent air turbulence at front I planned to build in a tubular cooler: the air which enters at the front two huge turboventilators forces into the pipes so whatever the speed is the front is always in a "rare-air" environment. These built-in gadgets forced me to lengthen the bonnet - it's over 2500 mm and widen the car to 2200 mm. The width justified the long wheelbase, 3000 mm, but as I didn't want away-too-long machine, it's only 4400 mm long. I had to put the wheels to the corners. This caused a design problem: how to transform the dimensions of the car at the edges without creating a feeling that the car is nothing more than an unlucky box-like combination of front-view and side-view? My solution is: I built in segments with restricted arches at the front of the car under the head light and at the rear to the spoiler under the exhaust system. Furthermore I blunted the corner edges by changing colors and materials. The interior, the instruments were constructed to reflect pure elegance. I carefully had an eye on the inner curves too. This car isn't destined to have a high maximum speed, but to accelerate like hell.
