Smart has presented the Concept #2, the first physical preview of its forthcoming all-electric two-seat city car. Unveiled during the smart Global Brand Event in Beijing on April 22, 2026, the design study introduces the proportions, styling direction and technical basis planned for the production smart #2. The finished road-going model is scheduled to make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.
The Concept #2 appeared alongside the smart #6 EHD at an event held under the theme “Change of Perspectives”. While the #6 EHD expands the company’s Chinese range into the fastback saloon segment, the smaller concept addresses a very different part of the smart portfolio. It returns the company’s attention to the compact two-seat format associated with the fortwo and places that format on a newly developed electric platform.
The exterior was created by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team according to smart’s “Love, Pure, Unexpected” design philosophy. Rather than presenting the car simply as an exercise in minimum dimensions, the designers worked with a theme described as “Function becomes Fashion”. The compact body is treated as a base for personalisation, with large surfaces, carefully defined volumes and contrasting details.
The show car combines a matte white body with warm gold elements. Fine leather-inspired hardware and details concealed beneath translucent surfaces form part of the concept’s presentation. These materials and finishes belong to the design study, while the fundamental silhouette gives the first indication of the proportions intended for the production smart #2.
At 2,792 mm long, the Concept #2 remains within the dimensions expected of a dedicated urban two-seater. Its wheels are positioned close to the outer corners of the body, a layout used to release as much cabin space as possible within the short overall length. Smart also gives the concept a turning circle of 6.95 metres, reflecting the manoeuvrability required for congested streets and confined parking spaces.
The familiar two-seat arrangement is therefore retained, but the surrounding design has been developed for the company’s current electric range. Smart states that the production model will be shaped around the way European customers travel, with agility, efficiency and uncomplicated daily use forming part of the development programme.
Beneath the concept is smart’s proprietary Electric Compact Architecture, known as ECA. The company developed the platform specifically for the forthcoming small electric model rather than adapting the underpinnings of one of its larger vehicles. The production smart #2 will be the first road-going model based on this architecture.
The preliminary targets announced with the concept include an electric range approaching 300 kilometres. Smart has made clear that this figure is an estimate for the development programme and not a final homologated WLTP value. Final range and specification details will be confirmed closer to the production car’s introduction.
The company is also targeting a direct-current charging time of less than 20 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent. Vehicle-to-load functionality forms another part of the proposed specification, allowing electrical equipment to draw energy from the car’s battery through a suitable external connection.
No battery capacity, motor output, acceleration figure or maximum speed was announced at the Beijing presentation. The information released with the Concept #2 concentrates instead on its compact dimensions, charging target, estimated range and the new architecture beneath it.
The Concept #2 is a non-production design study and will not be offered for sale in its present form. It previews the exterior proportions, technical direction and two-seat layout of the forthcoming smart #2, which will be a separate series-production model.
Smart plans to unveil that road-going version at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. The presentation will reveal how closely the finished body follows the matte white and gold concept, while also providing the final technical specifications, equipment structure and market information not included with the Beijing design study.
The production smart #2 is intended to return the brand to the two-seat city-car category with a fully electric drivetrain. It will join a range that already includes the #1, #3 and #5. Smart stated at the Beijing event that its global portfolio would expand from three models to five during 2026.
Although these vehicles occupy different size and body categories, their exterior and interior styling is developed through the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team. The smart #2 will nevertheless have a role of its own, using a dedicated compact architecture rather than the platform of one of the company’s larger models.
The Concept #2 therefore provides an early view of smart’s next electric city car rather than representing the finished vehicle itself. Its 2,792 mm length, two-seat cabin, 6.95-metre turning circle and preliminary charging and range targets define the initial outline of the project. The separate production smart #2 will be presented in Paris with its completed design and confirmed technical information.
