Opel Combo Outdoor Study: Sporty Lifestyle Van for Action and Fun

Hanover.  Opel is exhibiting in Hanover the Combo Outdoor study, a compact leisure-van concept based on the Combo, with a striking off-road look and lots of clever details. With an eye-catching yellow paint finish, the study demonstrates the versatility and leisure potential of the Combo. Performance plus economy is delivered by the 1.7 CDTI ECOTEC common rail turbo-diesel with a power output of 74 kW/100 hp.

The Combo Outdoor is based both on the five-seat “Tour” passenger-carrying version of Opel’s popular small van. Special design and equipment details give this study a rugged, off-road character with a sporty accent.

Setting a distinctive contrast to the yellow body are the black roof, a range of matt-black parts such as the lower sections of the front bumper and rear panel, the side sills, a large roof rack with a spare wheel and fuel canister, as well as a sturdy ladder at the rear. The B-pillars and the center bar between the rear windows are also in black, making the glass area look larger and creating a unified impression from every angle.

The front of the Combo Outdoor is itself eye-catching, with 3D-ellipsoid headlamps, a bumper with integrated fog lights, a central air inlet covered with a black grille and silver colored underbody guards (front and rear). The upper part of the windshield has an anthracite gray adhesive foil covering, giving the van an even more compact and sporty appearance. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels in nine-spoke design, with 195/50 R16 tires, underline the looks.

The Combo Outdoor is well-equipped for non-paved roads thanks to the “rough road” equipment package. This is available for all Combo production models and consists of modified suspension tuning with 20 mm higher ground clearance, protective shields for the engine compartment and fuel tank, and reinforced cladding around the hand-brake cable.

The study’s spacious interior, typical of the Combo, features matt chrome trim, a leather-covered steering wheel, chrome instrument dial rings, air conditioning, and the CD 70 Navi stereo radio and CD player with integrated navigation system.

1.7 CDTI ECOTEC: Turbo-diesel power combined with excellent fuel efficiency

The Outdoor study is powered by the new top engine in the Combo program – the 1.7-liter common rail turbo-diesel with 74 kW/100 hp. This state-of-the-art, four-cylinder ECOTEC unit has maximum torque of 240 Newton-meters at 2300 rpm, providing high pulling power and driving fun. The 1.7 CDTI complies with the Euro 4 exhaust emission standard and is extremely economical, with combined fuel consumption of 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers (MVEG). Out of town in the European test cycle, the Combo 1.7 CDTI needs as little as 4.4 liters per 100 km.

A team of designers and engineers from the International Technical Development Center and the GME Design Center in Rüsselsheim, who worked closely with specialists at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) and the Zender company, has developed the Combo Outdoor concept.
