Indio

Indio was a Uruguayan motor vehicle brand produced by Horacio Torrendell, S.A., based in Montevideo. The vehicles were designed and built by Horacio Torrendell and were manufactured at a plant on Cuareim Street.

The Indio was offered in three body styles—a station wagon, a pick-up truck and a jeep-style vehicle—all of which shared the same basic body panels. Despite their rugged appearance, the vehicles used a conventional two-wheel drive transmission. They were powered by Bedford petrol or diesel engines, and a smaller version powered by an Opel engine was introduced at a later stage.

In total, around 2,200 Indios were produced, making it the best-selling Uruguayan motor vehicle of its era. Many examples remained in daily use in Uruguay long after production ended, and Torrendell continued to supply spare parts to keep the vehicles running.
