The Spaulding Manufacturing Co. was based in Grinnell, Iowa, and traced its roots to the carriage-building business of Henry W. Spaulding, born in 1846 and died in 1937. Spaulding worked as a blacksmith and carriage builder, and by 1900 his enterprise was said to be the oldest and largest maker of vehicles west of the Mississippi River.
