Gearless [2] (United States)

Gearless Motor Corporation was an American automobile manufacturer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, active from 1920 to 1923. The company was founded by Duncan MacDonald, who also managed another venture, the MacDonald Steam Automotive Corporation, located in Garfield, Ohio. Gearless Motor Corporation specialized in steam-powered vehicles, a niche that gained attention in the years following World War I.

The Gearless automobile was notable for its unique engineering, featuring two separate 2-cylinder double-acting side-valve steam engines. Each engine powered one rear wheel, which eliminated the need for a traditional rear axle. This design was controlled by a single throttle, simplifying the driving experience. The company offered the Gearless in two configurations: a touring car priced at $2,600 and a roadster at $2,650. Customers could choose between wood or wire wheels for their vehicles.

Despite its innovative design, Gearless Motor Corporation faced significant challenges. The company ultimately failed after several of its officials, including MacDonald, were indicted for conspiracy and mail fraud related to the fraudulent sale of over $1 million in company stock. Although at least five Gearless cars were completed, the total production numbers remain unknown. Following the company's dissolution, MacDonald continued to have an interest in steam car design and conversions throughout his life.
