Brand Data

Company Name: Fox Motor Car Co.

Place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Country: United States

Fox Motor Car Company was established in 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Ainsley H. Fox, who previously manufactured shotguns and had formed the Fox Motor Company in 1914 to produce air-cooled engines. The company aimed to create complete automobiles, absorbing its engine-building division in the process.

The first Fox automobile was introduced in 1922, featuring a large and aesthetically appealing design built on a 128-inch (3249 mm) wheelbase. It was powered by a 4-litre air-cooled six-cylinder engine, which utilized aluminum pistons and overhead valves. The engine's six separately cast cylinders were cooled by a fan blower, distinguishing it from competitors. Initially, the company offered two body styles: a tourer priced at $3,900 and a sedan at $4,900, with a three-seater coupe added in 1923 for the same price as the sedan. In 1922, the wheelbase was extended to 132 inches (3350 mm).

Despite the quality of the Fox vehicles, the company faced challenges in a highly competitive automotive market. The Fox was often compared to the Franklin due to its air-cooled engine, but it was positioned in a higher price bracket, more akin to Cadillac. Production of the Fox automobiles commenced in May 1922 but ceased in December 1923. Estimates of total production varied significantly, ranging from 25 to 3,000 units, with the actual figure likely being only a few hundred.
