Place: Flint, Michigan

Country: United States

Flint Automobile Company was established in Flint, Michigan, by A.B.C. Hardy, who had previously been a partner in the Durant-Dort Carriage Company. Recognizing the potential of the automobile industry ahead of his former partners, Hardy left the company in 1901 to pursue his vision. He developed a light two-seater vehicle known as the Flint Roadster, which was also marketed under his own name. The Flint Roadster featured an 8-horsepower single-cylinder engine, chain drive, and offered the option of left- or right-hand tiller steering. It was priced at $850.

During its brief operation from 1902 to 1904, Flint Automobile Company produced a total of 52 units of the Roadster. However, production ceased when Hardy opted not to pay royalties associated with the Selden patent, which was held by the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers. Following the closure of his company, Hardy rejoined Billy Durant, who had recently entered the automotive market through the acquisition of Buick. In his later career, Hardy took on significant roles within General Motors, including management of the Marquette division and serving as vice president and general manager of Chevrolet.
