Federal was an American automobile manufacturer that operated in the early 20th century, specifically from 1907 to 1909. The company was initially established as the Federal Motor Car Company in Chicago, Illinois, before undergoing several name changes, including Federal Automobile Company and Rockford Automobile & Engine Company, which was based in Rockford, Illinois.

Throughout its brief existence, Federal produced a motor buggy that maintained a consistent design. The vehicle was equipped with a 14-horsepower air-cooled opposed-twin engine and featured a friction transmission system, where the flywheel served as the driving disc, coupled with a belt final drive. The pricing of the motor buggy increased over time, starting at $475 and reaching $800, with an additional cost of $100 for pneumatic tires.

In May 1909, the Rockford company was acquired by the Industrial Automobile Company of Elkhart, Indiana. Following this acquisition, it is believed that a limited number of Federal vehicles were assembled under the new ownership, marking the end of the brand's independent production.
