Brand Data

Company Name: Studebaker-Packard Corp.

Place: Detroit, Michigan

Country: United States

The Clipper was a brand of automobiles produced by the Studebaker-Packard Corporation during the 1955 and 1956 model years. Based in Detroit, Michigan, the company aimed to create a distinct identity for the Clipper nameplate, separating it from the more luxurious Packard models. This strategic decision was made by company president James J. Nance, who believed that the association with lower-priced models was diluting the Packard brand's prestige.

The Clipper lineup consisted of three models: De Luxe, Super, and Custom. All models were powered by a 5768cc V8 engine, which delivered 240 horsepower in the De Luxe and Super variants, while the Custom model produced 275 horsepower. The body styles available included a four-door sedan and a two-door hardtop, featuring design elements that closely resembled those of the senior Packard models.

In 1957, the Clipper brand was reabsorbed into the Packard range, utilizing a Studebaker bodyshell for its production. During its brief existence as an independent make, a total of 18,482 Clippers were manufactured, significantly outpacing the production of senior Packards, which totaled 10,353 units in the same year. The Clipper's short-lived status reflected the challenges faced by the Packard brand in maintaining its market position during a period of intense competition in the automotive industry.
