Buckboard was a small-scale automotive brand established in 1956 by designer Don Bruce in the Bronx, New York. The brand focused on creating a modern cyclecar, which was a lightweight vehicle designed for efficiency and simplicity. The Buckboard utilized a 4CV Renault frame, which provided a sturdy foundation for the vehicle.
The cyclecar was powered by an Ariel 'Square 4' motorcycle engine, which was positioned at the rear of the vehicle. This design featured a distinctive two-seater body that was constructed using marine plywood bulkheads, which were then planked with mahogany strips. The engine protruded through the body, contributing to the unique aesthetic of the vehicle.
In addition to manufacturing the Buckboard, Don Bruce also sold plans and brochures that allowed enthusiasts to build their own versions of the cyclecar using various frames available in the United States and Europe. This approach catered to a niche market of DIY automotive enthusiasts.
