The Brubaker Box was a unique vehicle produced by The Brubaker Group, based in Los Angeles, California, starting in 1972. Originally conceived as a kit car, it transitioned into a fully assembled vehicle, showcasing an innovative mini-van design. The Brubaker Box utilized the floorpan and running gear of the Volkswagen Beetle, which contributed to its distinctive characteristics.
Designed by industrial designer Curtis Brubaker, the vehicle garnered significant publicity and public interest due to its spacious interior and more refined features compared to typical kit cars of the era. However, the production faced challenges as Volkswagen did not sell new chassis without bodies, compelling Brubaker to purchase new Beetles, sell the original bodywork to repair shops, and then add his custom shell.
Despite its promising design and concept, the Brubaker Box ultimately struggled with high production costs, leading to the completion of only three units. The project was later sold to AUTOMECCA, marking the end of its brief production run.
