A.W. Dougill & Co. Ltd was a British automobile manufacturer based in Leeds, Yorkshire, that operated from 1896 to 1899. The company focused on producing several experimental vehicles during its brief existence, which were characterized by their rear-mounted horizontal engines. These engines utilized a belt drive system connected to a countershaft, with a chain final drive.
In 1899, A.W. Dougill & Co. assembled several Lawson Motor Wheels at their factory. Designed by Harry Lawson, these motor wheels were self-contained units that included a wheel, petrol tank, and brake, allowing them to be used for motorizing horse-drawn vehicles. However, the power output of these units was limited, making them suitable only for light two-seater vehicles. Additionally, Dougill produced some complete three-wheeled cars during this period.
Following its initial foray into automobile production, the company transitioned to manufacturing friction-driven FRICK cars and commercial vehicles from 1904 to 1907. Despite its short operational timeline, A.W. Dougill & Co. contributed to the early development of motor vehicles in the United Kingdom.
