Brand Data

Company Name: Coronet Motor Co. Ltd

Place: Coventry

Country: United Kingdom

Coronet Motor Co. Ltd was established in 1903 in Coventry, United Kingdom, primarily to manufacture motorcycles. However, the production of motorcycles was minimal, and the company shifted its focus to automobile manufacturing in 1904 under the guidance of chief engineer Walter Iden, who was the son of George Iden, a designer for the Midland Motor Car Company.

Initially, Coronet produced two models: an 8 horsepower single-cylinder car and a 16 horsepower four-cylinder car, notable for its unique firing order of 1-2-3-4. The vehicles were claimed to be of all-British manufacture, with the exception of certain components such as the radiator, ignition coil, and springs, which were sourced from France. In 1905, the company expanded its lineup to include two additional four-cylinder models: a 12 horsepower car featuring a gilled tube radiator and a 16/20 horsepower variant equipped with a honeycomb radiator. Both models utilized shaft drive and were designed with rear-entrance tonneau bodies.

Despite its efforts, Coronet Motor Co. faced persistent financial difficulties, having been under-subscribed by nearly £7,000 against a nominal capital of £20,000 at its inception. The company ultimately ceased operations in 1906, and its factory was subsequently acquired by Humber.
