Company Name: Vulcan Motor & Engineering Co. Ltd
Place: Dunstable, Bedfordshire
Country: United Kingdom
Chiltern was a British automobile manufacturer that operated briefly from 1919 to 1920. The company was based in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, and was a subsidiary of the Vulcan Motor & Engineering Co. Ltd. The name "Chiltern" suggested a connection to Vulcan, and it is believed that the company utilized Vulcan chassis for its vehicles.
The primary model produced by Chiltern was a medium-sized tourer, which was powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder Dorman KNO engine. The design of the Chiltern vehicles featured modifications such as different radiators and locally-made bodywork, which distinguished them from their Vulcan counterparts. Additionally, the similarities in the mounting gearbox and torque tube indicated that the Chiltern was fundamentally based on Vulcan engineering.
Production of the Chiltern was limited, with estimates suggesting that as many as 100 units were manufactured during its short operational period. The company ultimately ceased production, and its vehicles remain a rare example of early 20th-century British motoring.
