Brand Data

Company Name: Barclay Motors Ltd.

Place: Aston, Birmingham

Country: United Kingdom

Barclay Motors Ltd was established in 1933 in Aston, Birmingham, United Kingdom. The company aimed to produce a family saloon car at a time when such vehicles were predominantly manufactured by larger mass producers. The Barclay project was notable for its ambition to enter a competitive market with a unique offering.

The prototype vehicle featured an 1122cc Coventry-Climax engine, which was also utilized in the 10hp Crossley, giving it a resemblance to that model. The car was equipped with a Moss gearbox, Spicer joints, and an ENV spiral bevel rear axle. An alternative pre-selector gearbox was available alongside the standard 4-speed synchromesh option. Despite its high axle ratio of 4.6:1, the car was noted for its good road-holding capabilities and brisk performance.

The four-door saloon body was constructed by Jensen, and the design was specifically intended to appeal to female drivers. However, the Barclay did not progress beyond the prototype stage, and the project ultimately did not reach production.
