Astral was a British automobile manufacturer that operated briefly from 1923 to 1924. The company was established by Hertford Engineering Co. Ltd, located in Barking, Essex. Astral distinguished itself from other small manufacturers of the time by producing most of its components in-house, including a notable 1720cc single overhead cam (SOHC) four-cylinder engine.
The vehicles produced by Astral featured advanced engineering for their era, including a ball-bearing crankshaft, Lucas coil ignition, Dynastart, and four-wheel brakes. The cars were available in configurations for either two or four passengers, offering open body styles. Production numbers were limited, and the brand is remembered for its exclusivity. One of the few known customers was Captain D. Drummond, a member of a prominent banking family, who famously raced his Astral, nicknamed "Goshawk," at Brooklands in 1923.
