The Akron brand was associated with early automotive efforts in the United States during the late 19th century. Founded in 1899 in Akron, Ohio, the Akron Machine Company initially specialized in manufacturing agricultural implements, such as mower knives and sickles. In this period, the company ventured into the automotive sector by offering a motor carriage, which was a light two-seater stanhope powered by a single-cylinder engine.

Despite the development of several prototypes, the Akron Machine Company did not proceed to full-scale production of their motor carriage. In 1900, the company transitioned to the Akron Motor Carriage Company, but this new entity also failed to launch any vehicles into the market. The Woodruff brothers, Albert and George, who were instrumental in the design of the Akron motor carriage, later established their own automotive business under the name Woodruff.
