Brand Data

Company Name: Mariah Motorsports/Design Energy Inc.

Place: Santa Barbara, California

Country: United States

Mariah Motorsports was an American rotary specialist based in Santa Barbara, California. Founded in the early 1980s by James Hagerty, with fabrication and design work led alongside partner Dan McCue, the shop focused on Mazda RX-7 development—building race engines and designing fiberglass and composite body packages. Its most recognized products included the first-generation RX-7 “Mode One” and “Mode Four” kits and the second-generation FC “Mode 6” wide-body, parts that saw use on SCCA E-Production racers and street cars alike. Mariah also executed complete vehicle builds and turbo conversions, and its in-house branding occasionally appeared as “Design Energy” on completed cars and components.

The company operated for more than three decades and remained active until Hagerty’s death in 2018, after which Mariah Motorsports closed. The shop’s molds, tooling, and remaining inventory were subsequently taken over in Santa Barbara and the body kits returned to limited production under Rotary Engineering, preserving the Mariah designs for RX-7 enthusiasts.
