Csonka was a pioneering automobile manufacturer based in Hungary, active from 1899 to 1912. Founded by János Csonka, a notable figure in early Hungarian automotive engineering, the company emerged from Csonka's extensive background in mechanical engineering and his innovative contributions to internal combustion technology.

János Csonka was born in 1852 into a family of blacksmiths, where he acquired essential skills from his father. He later moved to Budapest, where he worked for the Hungarian Railways and traveled across Europe to study internal combustion engines. Upon his return, he became a workshop foreman at the Budapest Technical University, where he developed Hungary's first internal combustion engine and various stationary engines. His work garnered the attention of Ganz, a major Hungarian industrial company, which patented several of his inventions.

In 1900, Csonka designed motorized tricycles for the Hungarian Post, marking the beginning of his foray into automotive design. He later created postal vans, which were the first vehicles designed and built in Hungary. Following these early projects, Csonka introduced his first small car in 1909, notable for being the first Hungarian-built vehicle equipped with a cardan shaft. This model featured a one-cylinder engine producing 4 brake horsepower, with some units remaining operational for over 25 years.

In 1911, Csonka launched an 8 brake horsepower water-cooled small car, characterized by its block construction that integrated the engine, gearbox, transmission, and brakes into a single unit. A total of 14 units were produced, with most being acquired by the Hungarian Post. However, as larger industrial companies sought to enter the automotive sector, they pressured Csonka to either focus on academia or establish his own car manufacturing firm. Ultimately, he chose to remain at the university, which led to the cessation of his automotive endeavors.

After retiring in 1924, Csonka established a new company focused on building stationary engines. He passed away in 1939, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in the development of Hungary's automotive industry.
