Sono Motors was a Munich-based electric-vehicle startup founded in 2016 by Laurin Hahn, Jona Christians, and Navina Pernsteiner to develop the Sion, a compact hatchback with photovoltaic panels integrated into its bodywork. Early funding came via crowdfunding in 2016, and running prototypes were shown from 2017. The company later listed its holding company, Sono Group N.V., in New York. In February 2023, amid funding shortfalls, it terminated the Sion passenger-car program and pivoted to supplying solar-integration technology (e.g., retrofit “Solar Bus Kit”) to other manufacturers and fleet operators.
