Fafnir was a German automobile manufacturer founded in 1908 in Aachen, originally known as Aachener Stahlwarenfabrik Fafnir-AG. The company initially specialized in producing motorcycle engines and later expanded its operations to include the development of automotive components. One of its notable contributions to the automotive industry was the creation of the Omnimobil kit, which provided an engine and essential parts that enabled various bicycle manufacturers, such as CITO and Feldmann, to transition into car production.

In 1908, Fafnir began manufacturing complete automobiles, offering models equipped with 4-cylinder engines of 1520cc and 2012cc. These engines featured overhead inlet and side exhaust valves, with the smaller engine utilizing separately cast cylinders while the larger model had pair-cast cylinders. Throughout its production years, Fafnir developed several engine sizes, although none were particularly large by contemporary standards. One of the significant models produced was the 1924cc 8/22PS Typ 472, which was manufactured between 1912 and 1914 and included an automatic lubrication system.

Following World War I, Fafnir reintroduced the Typ 472 along with another pre-war design, the 2496cc 10/25PS Typ 384. Additionally, the company launched the Typ 471, which featured a 1950cc engine capable of producing 50 brake horsepower. This model was available in a sporting variant, characterized by distinctive body designs, and when equipped with a supercharger, it could achieve an output of 80 brake horsepower. Fafnir ceased operations in 1926, marking the end of its contributions to the automotive landscape.
